To Fold

This project is titled “to fold,” the present action of folding. Folding is the foundation of origami; it’s literally all that it is. But through the form of ceramics, this folding action becomes solidified and structured. It is no longer moldable like paper. The first part of this project examined the process of creative labor: making a large group of objects without a concrete goal in mind, outside of just enjoying the action of working and making. The second part is a video of me playing with the objects and fitting them together. The video’s purpose is to visually show unburdened creativity.

I had no idea how the objects were going to fit together, but that was the point. The pieces are like building blocks to more; they are moldable, while the actual material is not. The body of work becomes a way to understand structure and creativity. Not one person will interact with the work in the same way. The way I approached playing with them is not the same as another. The final portion of this project was to continue with that idea of play and unburdened creativity. What else can you be?
