Felted
Exploration on fear and failure.
Felted: a process where yarn, fur, or hair is matted together by heat, moisture, friction, and great pressure.
I spent two weeks handcrafting a sweater from silk and wool yarn. After its first wash, I opened the machine to find my work destroyed. The sweater had felted beyond repair. When wool felts, the individual fibers within each strand fuse together via friction, forming a dense and matted material. What was once malleable and soft became stiff and unrecognizable.
I desperately tried to return it to its original state. In my efforts to remedy what was ruined, I tore a portion of the felted fabric. All of my hard work was now truly beyond repair.
This body of work exists as a personal archive of failure. The photographs and letter humbly display these deeply personal and uncomfortable moments of not being good enough.
